HomeMy Public PortalAboutMinutes-01/02/2008 (Revised) Council Proceedings Tiffin City Council January 2,2008 Mayor Royce Phillips called Special Meeting to order at 6:30pm at the Tiffin fire Station Meeting Room. Council persons present: James Bartels, Ruth Demuth, Michael Gericke, Mark Petersen and John Wright. Also present Attorney Stephen Greenleaf, Engineer Mike Hart, Public Works Brett Mehmen and Brian Detert, Fire chief Randy Morgan, P&Z Steve Berner and Melvin Reeve. Newly Elected Mayor Phillips introduced himself and explained the format for City Council proceedings. Motion Wright, seconded by Petersen to re-appoint Attorney Greenleaf as City Attorney for year 2008. Greenleaf presented his budget request for 2008-2009. Council will review at appropriate time. All-Ayes. Motion Petersen, seconded by Bartels to re-appoint Engineer Mike Hart as City Engineer for year 2008. Councilpersons inquired on Engineer's fee schedule. All-Ayes. Motion'Bartels, seconded by Wright to appoint Councilperson Petersen as Mayor ProTem for 2008. All- Ayes. Motion Petersen, seconded by Gericke to appoint Councilperson Wright as Sergeant of Arms for 2008: All-Ayes. a Motion Wright, seconded by Petersen to not re-appoint Clerk Margaret Reihman for a two year appointment. All-Ayes. Clerk Reihman requested to finish out two remaining days of week, 30 day severance, vacation days, sick days, and to place a thank-you note to community in next utility billing. Motion Wright, seconded by Gericke to allow requested terms. All-Ayes. Mayor Phillips read letter of resignation from Councilperson Demuth. Motion Wright, seconded by Petersen to accept resignation. All-Ayes for four remaining Councilpersons. Motion Petersen, seconded by Wright, to appoint Demuth to two year appointment as City Clerk- Treasurer for 2008 and 2009, effective immediately. All-Ayes. Motion Wright, seconded by Petersen to set Clerk's Salary at $42,000 per year with no extra compensation paid for attending meetings. New office hours for City Office would be Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 11:30am and 12:30 to 5:00pm. Recommended that new Clerk begin process to obtain _. certification. All-Ayes. Fire Chief Morgan reminded Mayor& Councilpersons that someone would need to be appointed represent city on Johnson County Emergency Management. Mayor Phillips suggested this request would be put on the January regular City Council Agenda. Councilperson Petersen introduced citizen, Josh Curphy who was interested in filling the council vacancy. • Mayor Phillips explained process by Iowa Code required in filling Council vacancy. Engineer Hart reminded Councilpersons of meeting with School District on Road Improvements on 28E agreement. Motion' carried to adjourn. All-Ayes.
