MINUTES- April 19, 2001
I. ROLL CALL AND CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. Committee members, Bill Murphy, Neil
Thompson, Mike Lenzi, and Dave Faurot were present. Scotty Davenport, Terry Lewis and Todd
Sholty were absent. Director Peckham declared a quorum.
II. NEW BUSINESS
The committee discussed the idea of classes being free for children. The committee rejected the
idea for the present based on the following reasons:
• If you offer it free now, would it be free next year
• Where would the ownership .or responsibility be for parents to get their children to the
programs if it were free
• It would not be fair and equitable to the gymnastics parents who have been paying all
year
• If it is free for kids, then it should be free for adults
• It is more fiscally responsible to pay off the debt and wipe the slate clean before offering
free classes
• The recreation department has been directed to make money and why the change now
Faurot made a motion to keep the fee structure the committee submitted to Council, use
the money to help eliminate the deficit and not to offer free programs at this current time.
Thompson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The committee would like more time to discuss the idea and come up with a recommendation of
free recreation classes. One possible recommendation is the following:
• Free classes for children and adults in the City limits
• Children and adults outside the City limits would pay a one time yearly fee of $50.00
• The recreation budget would be increased $30 — 50,000 to compensate for the lost
revenue
• Any deficit remaining after this fiscal year, the deficit is wiped clean
Lenzi would like a more detailed explanation of the $39,000 deficit the recreation department
has accrued. Director Peckham will get an explanation from the Finance department before the
next meeting.
IV. NEXT MEETING
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 3rd, 6:30pm at the City of McCall
Conference Room.
