HomeMy Public PortalAboutArcher, Dr. C.L.Country Dentist
C. L. Archer, or "Doc" Archer as
he is known in Long Valley, practices
dentistry the way good old country
doctors used to practice
medicine.Archer allows plenty of time
in his full schedule for each patient
-ninety minutes just for a routine visit
-and he fills his appointment book un-
til late in evenings and on week -ends.
It's not unusual to visit this dentist at
nine -thirty PM or on a Sunday, and
once you're in the office. he treats
whatever tooth trouble you have slow-
ly and carefully, taking time as he
works to talk with you about your job,
your family, the cattle market, the
soaring price of gas...
Archer's prices, however, have
changed little over the twenty-one
years he's been in practice. New pa-
tients often blink in astonishment at
their bills, for its it's hardnot to be
surprised at how little he charges.
There are no frills in his waiting
room, no Muzak piped in, no plastic
ferns or bubbling aquariums, and the
Doctor is his own receptionist and
bookkeeper - a few of the reasons his
charges are low. Even so, Doc Archer
isn't keeping up with inflation, but in
his own way he's trying to fight it.
Somebody, he explains, just has to
refuse to demand more for less.
Unfortunately for people here,
Archer is closing his practice this fall.
He plans not to make any appoint-
ments after Labor Day, and to leave
dentistry for a while to try his hand at
driving a logging truck. Long Valley
will undoubtedly feel the loss of its
"country dentist" when Doc Archer
leaves. ❑

McCall mayor weds Irene
Cantrall at square dance
It started out as a typical Saturday
night square dance, but on this
particular night, two dancers would
get closer than even a promenade
would have them.
--Irene Cantrall of Cascade and Clyde
"Doc" Archer, mayor of McCall, were
married Saturday night at the
Amercian Legion Hall in Cascade at
the monthly dance meeting of the
Thunder Mountian Squares.
Archer and Cantrall are regulars at
the Thunder Mountain Squares
monthly dances.
Hugh Olson performed the service,
with D.I. Rising, caller that night,
acting as best man and Susan Harvey
the matron of honor.
Cantrall and Archer had actually
only been "thinking" about "maybe'

getting married during the dance, said
Cantrall. According to Dorothy
Ireland, the former mayor of
Donnelly, the couple has been known
to procrastinate about tying the knot
(they have been dating for over five
years and took out their marriage
license in May) and fellow square
dancers decided to take things in hand.
Irene was sent home for the
marriage license, Dorothy and Guy
Ireland went looking for a minister
and Susan Harvey produced a bride and
groom to place on the cake usually
reserved for an anniversary or birthday.
Before you could "swing your
partner," the beaming couple became
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Archer.
Cantrall has lived in the Round
Valley and Cascade area since 1945.
She has two children, six
grandchildren and three step -
grandchildren. She is currently
working part-time in the M & M
Cafe.
Archer, who has lived and worked
as a dentist in McCall for the last 28
years, was elected the city mayor in
Jan. 1984. He recently closed up his
dentist business for a year while he
was constructing a new office
building.
"I fast met Doc when I took the
kids to him when they were just
little," she said. "We've been seeing
each other since 1981, we just about
wore out the highway between here
and McCall."
"As soon as I get done finishing the
living quarters, Irene can move up
here," said Archer.
Archer has five children and six
grandchildren, who were told about the
marriage on Sunday during a family
barbecue at his daughter and son-in-
law's home (Cappela and Gary Ikola).
Cappela produced the bottle of
champagne to celebrate.
