HomeMy Public PortalAboutResolution 61-178RESOLUTION NO. 61 -178 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TEMPLE CITY, CALIFORNIA SUPPORTING LEGIS- LATION TO PROHIBIT COMMERCIAL DRAW POKER PARLORS WITHOUT PROHIBITION OF NON - COMMERCIAL DRAW POKER AND LOWBALL GAMES. WHEREAS, there has recently been a concerted effort to establish draw poker parlors in the city of Duarte, and WHEREAS, the aforesaid effort to establish draw poker parlors resulted in a great expenditure of money and energy by residents in the city of Cuarte and in the adjacent areas an- ticipated to be affected thereby, and WHEREAS, to prevent any recurrence of such an attempt in the San Gabriel Valley area and a resultant unnecessary waste of money and energy, state legislative action is required, and WHEREAS, there is a considerable difference between the playing of draw poker by friendly groups and the operation of poker parlors for profit, NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY OF TEMPLE CITY DOES HEREBY RE- SOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The City of Temple City declares its opposi- tion to commercial poker parlors as a detriment to the public welfare. SECTION 2. The City of Temple City does hereby request that the Honorable Edmond G. Brown, Governor, State of Califor- nia include in his proclamation calling for the next special session of the Legislature that the Legislature consider and enact legislation prohibiting commercial draw poker, or con- sider a proposal to the people of the State of California that the Constitution of the State be amended to prohibit commercial draw poker and lowball draw poker. SECTION 3. The City of Temple City does specifically declare that it is not opposed to non - commercial draw or low - ball poker games as have been played by family and other groups since the very beginning of the State of California.
