Thomas Balch Library and George Mason University Sign
Memorandum of Agreement for Academic Cooperation
Leesburg, VA (April 9, 2010) – On March 31, 2010, Leesburg Town Manager John Wells, and
Alexandra S. Gressitt, Library Director, Town of Leesburg, met with Dean Jack R. Censer of the
College of Humanities and Social Sciences for George Mason University and Brian Platt, Associate
Professor, Chair of the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University, to sign a
Memorandum of Agreement for academic cooperation. The agreement provides for an
arrangement with George Mason University as they move into Loudoun County and Thomas Balch
Library in Leesburg to provide opportunities to connect with established and developing scholars by
providing educational programs for the community.
The agreement also establishes cooperative benefits with regard to internships through
professional experiences for students in processing collections at the library that will be made
available for researcher use.
“This is a great opportunity for an academic institution and a public history institution to forge
mutually beneficial relations to the advantage of the community, by developing rewarding and
meaningful educational experiences for students and faculty,” said Alexandra Gressitt, Director of
Thomas Balch Library.
The Thomas Balch Library is located at 208 West Market Street in downtown Leesburg.
