Officials Tour Sycolin Road and the Route 15 Bypass
Funding sought for heavily congested area
Leesburg, VA (April 14, 2010) – Town officials and representatives from U.S. Senator Mark
Warner’s office took a bus tour on April 8, 2010 of the Town of Leesburg’s number one
transportation priority, the heavily congested area of the Route 15 Bypass and Sycolin Road. The
tour was conducted by the Town as a fact‐finding mission for the Senator’s office in order to relay
the significant need for financing of the project known as the “Sycolin Road Flyover.”
The tour was hosted by Vice Mayor Katie Hammler, Councilmember Ken Reid, and Councilmember
Dave Butler. Nicholas Devereux and Scott Price of Senator Warner’s staff received a video
presentation from the Leesburg Police Department, as well as maps and traffic data from Town
Manager John Wells, Director of Public Works Tom Mason and Town Traffic Engineer, Calvin Grow.
The goal of the tour was to raise awareness for the Senator as to the significant need for funding,
from various sources, of the Sycolin Road Flyover.
The Sycolin Road Flyover project will alleviate the significant traffic congestion currently
experienced at the intersection of the Route 15 Bypass and Sycolin Road by eliminating the stop
lights. The project, which is under design by VDOT, will take Sycolin Road over the Bypass,
removing the at‐grade intersection. Further information regarding the flyover project can be
obtained by contacting Calvin Grow, Traffic Engineer for the Town of Leesburg at 703.771.2791 or
cgrow@leesburgva.gov.
