Members discussedneed for'{ new and repair of older sidewalks inside the city. 41 1 '1 Hit i 1°' Recommendation to the city council that safety and school routes be addressed by the council first. School routes needed immediately are along one or both sides of Potter Street between Stetzel and Sewell Streets, and also on one or both sides of College Street between the trailer court and south entrance to the high school. Flasher warning lights have been installed by IDOT for school crossing safety on Hwy 6. A basketball,coutt for the Potter Street Park was discussed as a need of the area. Traffic accidents for west bound vehicles was discussed for the corner of Stephans and Hwy 6. Berner reported seeing at least 5 bumper collisions, Huedepohl reported seeing 3 or 4, Petersen reported seeing at least 3'at this intersection. A wider radius for left hand turns is needed here or turning lane capacities. Petersen suggested a red flasher at the location. Most-problems seem to be with people traveling in a westerly direction. Joe Johnston has made a request for a variance on his R-1 zone for his property at 230 Main, to allow a duplex in this location and will include a drop of litigation against the city.• Board of Adjustment is set for Monday,June 17, 2002. Petersen reported that the orange dump truck remains on the west end of Sewell Street and fears that'a small child may be hurt here. Members reviewed commercial uses for the zoning ordinance. Lisa Carlsson of East Central Iowa Council of Governments reviewed input and suggestions to this time for improvement in response measures to hazards-for the community. Lisa will try to procure more accurate aerial photographs'of the city for the ' report, and she will continue to see if any flood protection measures can be provided against activity underway in Coralville to fill their Clear Creek floodplain with new fill dirt and businesses. Question regarding funding source for call response costs to interstate 80- I-380.1,Bemer will obtain a reports on traffic accident responses to the area. The city will study comparison of calls for a similar,size community out of the vicinity of an interstate, crossing, to see if the nearby location of the federal road has a significant impact oni ) emergency calls, and emergency readiness required., If the comparison indicates significant differences from othercoi-rununities, the city rwill address means for obtaining federal assistance for providing first response to highway assistance including!the need to respond to a hazardous material emergency in the area.
