Revised Leesburg Sign Ordinance Goes to
Public Hearing on Thursday, May 20, 2010
Leesburg, VA (May 10, 2010) – The Leesburg Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on
proposed revisions to Article 15 of the Town’s Zoning Ordinance, commonly known as the sign
ordinance, at its regular meeting on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Town Council
Chambers (25 West Market Street).
The proposed revisions are the result of a comprehensive review of the sign ordinance, taking
the growth of Leesburg business community and technological changes in the sign industry into
account. In order to ensure that the review included the perspectives of Leesburg residents
and businesses, Town staff began the revision process in February 2010 with the formation of a
ten‐member stakeholder group, composed of residents, business owners/operators and
community business organization representatives. The stakeholder team met twice, in
February and April 2010, and provided feedback to Town staff on the proposed changes to the
ordinance. Staff also met with the Leesburg Downtown Business Association to discuss the
proposed changes to the sign ordinance.
Discussing the revision process, Deputy Zoning Administrator Wade Burkholder, who served as
project manager for the ordinance revision, remarked, “Town staff worked very hard to create
a comprehensive and transparent ordinance review process. We appreciate the effort put into
this process by the stakeholder team and the many thoughtful suggestions we received from
everyone involved with the project.”
Throughout the ordinance review process, Town staff provided updates on the project via the
“Sign Regulations Review” page of the Town’s website (www.leesburgva.gov/SignReview). In
addition to the background information on the project and the proposed revisions, the
webpage also includes an online survey form for members of the public to provide feedback on
commercial signage throughout the Town.

Following the public hearing, the Planning Commission will make a recommendation to the
Town Council on approval of the proposed revisions to the sign ordinance. The Town Council
will hold a public hearing prior to taking final action on the proposed revisions. The Town
Council public hearing and action is expected to take place this summer.
