MID-PENINSULA REGIONAL PARK DISTRICT
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
November 30, 1972 Sunnyvale City Council Chambers
1. CALL TO ORDER : Victor Calvo
The first regular meeting of- the Mid-Peninsula Regional Park
District was called to order at 8 :20 p.m. Supervisor Calvo
pointed out that"the agenda is light but the occasion is heavy. "

2. S`.e'E'ARING ITS? OF DIRECTORS : Judge Stanley R. Evans
The directors were sworn in by Judge Evans who has been
active in conservation issues in this area for many years.
3. PRESEI-T1'.'"IONS
A. Presentation to the Board on behalf of Assemblyman Richard
Hayden by Fred Logan and Kermit Smith of a California state
flag with a certificate stating that the flag had flo,,,rn
over the State Capitol.
B. 'Ielcome and congratulations by Councilman Gil Gunn of
Sunnyvale
4. ELECTION OF OFFICERS :
A. President :
Motion made by Nonette Hanko : I nominate Dan Wendin as
President of the Mid-4eninsula Regional Park District
Board of Directors. Seconded by Bill Peters. TDassed
unanimously.
B. Vice President :
Motion made by Kay Puffy : I nominate Nonette HE.nko as
Vice President of the "Ilid-Peninsula Regional Park
District Board of Directors. Seconded by Dan Condron.
Passed unanimously. Nonette in her acceptance wished
to thank the people who helped establish the Distric1le
Stanley Norton, Mary Davey, Joah �� Tom Brown, Larry
Klein, 'Prilliam spangle, Roger McConnell , Marion Foftkyy
Robert Girard, Lois Hogle , Barbara Eastman, Pat
Barantj.ne , Mary & 14allace Stegner, Fadlo ?,Iousalam,
Eleanor Boushey, Mary Gordon, Jackie Hall , Jerry
Smith and all the other people who worked and voted

5. DECIGN r:.TION OF TE1PORr,RY RECORDING rECRETARY :
Janet Condron will be the temporary recording secretary.
6. REPORTC & RESOLUTIONC :
A. Funds :
Because the District will not have any funds until Dc cember,
1973, it is necessary that an urgEney bill go through the
Legislature. Assemblyman Hayden introduced AB 2392 which
passed the house and was carried through the Cenate by
Senator !.lfred Alquist. It is currently awaiting the
Governor' ' s signature.
B. Resolutions :
Director Hanko introduced Resolutions No. 1-72 and 2-72 to
Assemblyman Hayden and Senator Alquist ' to commend and express
appreciation for their past and continued support of the
Mid-Peninsula Regional Park District for their prompt and
efficient advocacy on the District' s behalf.
7. TIME, FRE::'�UENCY, AND -'LACr, OF BOARD MEETINGS :
Motion made by Bill 'Deters that the Board meet the second and
fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 :30 p,m. The place
of the meeting to rotate by ward. :'econded by Nonette
Hanko. Pas-ed unanimously.
The next meeting will be in Saratoga at the Conference Room.
president Wendin pointed out the next meeting will be a working
meeting to establish the procedures under which the Board will
operate, staffing procedures, how we can aquire land , financing,
office facilities, etc. He also asked Nonette to draft up some
possible procedures of operation for the next meeting. In the
meantime the agenda for the next meeting will be open.
8. OTHER NET;' BUSINESS:
A. Meetings with other public agencies:
Director Hanko mentioned the possi:}ility of a meeting with
Mayor Jerry Smith of Saratoga on recember 29.
Motion made by Dan Condron that we not begin these m�.etings
until January,1973, and that we send a letter to
Mayor Smith indicating this. Seconded by Nonette
Hanko. Passed unanimously.
9. ORAL C O"'. 4UNI C ATI ON:
A. El Retiro Retreat :
1 ) Dorothy Gray, 762 Edgewood Lane, Los Altos
Regarding a 16.8 acre parcel on ;^dobe Creek currently
owned by the Jesuit Fathers. They are planning to sell
and,-the land is to be zoned by Los Altos at the next
meeting of the City Council on ''ecember 13. It is
already being considered for development. Mrs. Gray
and 200 other citizens in Los _Altos went this land to
re a open t oax°d for advice and

2-) Arthur Ogilvie, Associate Planner, Santa Clara County
Mr. Ogilvie pointed out the. important archaeological
aspects of this land in relation to the Ohlone Indians.

Tom Brownj 2374 Deodora Ave. , Los Altos
Mr. Brown had been at the recent Los Altos City
Council meeting where this land had been annexed.
"The majority of the Council does not understand
open space and they don't see a need for an e.:isting
open space element. "
Motion made by Director peters that we submit a letter to
the City Planning Commission and the City Council
of the City of Los Altos urging the preservation
of the El Retiro sight in some form"of open space
and that we ask that a copy of the environmental
impact study be forwarded to us prior to designation
so that we could then decide upon further action.
Seconded by Nonette Hanko. Passed unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 9:25 p.m.
