RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF TEMPLE CITY
PROCLAIMING PUBLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
WHEREAS, it is as true today as it was in Jefferson's time
that 'If a nation expects to be ignorant and free...it expects
what never was and never will be,' and
WHEREAS, it is also true today, as it was in Jefferson's
time that '...there is no ultimate depository of the ultimate
powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think
them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a
wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them,
but to inform their discretion by education,' and
WHEREAS, the public schools of America have provided public
education to the end that life, liberty and the pursuit of hap-
piness might continue on this continent, and
WHEREAS, the availability of public education makes it
possible for each child to achieve his maximum capability and
thus make of himself the skilled and knowledgeable citizens that
today's world demands, and
WHEREAS, the public schools of America have played, and
do play, a significant role in uniting in a common understanding
of our heritage people of varying backgrounds, races, and creeds;
and
WHEREAS, our public schools are not only symbols of
freedom but doors to a better life,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TEMPLE CITY
