HomeMy Public PortalAboutResolution 63-2911 RESOLUTION NO. 63 -291 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TEMPLE CITY REFUTING PUBLIC PRONOUNCEMENT BY GOVERNOR PAT BROWN THAT NO PUBLIC TRANSPORT- ATION SYSTEM CAN BE BUILT IN THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES WITHOUT THE AID OF A TAX LEVY IN SUPPORT THEREOF WHEREAS, Governor Pat Brown has made a public statement to the effect that no public transportation can be built or operated without the aid of a tax levy in support thereof, and WHEREAS, there has been presented to the Contract Cities Association and to cities individually a proposal by Alweg Monorail for a rapid transit system operable without taxpayer support, and find it meritorious, NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TEMPLE CITY DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1: That the statement of Governor Pat Brown to the effect that no public transportation system for the general use and benefit of the people in Los Angeles County can be operated without tax support is a statement which is not based upon any true considera- tion of the ability of private enterprise to provide public transporta- tlon without cost to the taxpayer. II SECTION 2: That the Alweg Monorail proposal appears to be one solution to- providing a rapid transit network without taxpayer support; that the Alweg proposal should be given further considera- tion by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles and by Governor Pat Brown. 1 SECTION 3: That private industry has not been afforded the opportunity nor the encouragement by either the Board of Supervis- ors or the State of California to provide a rapid transit system to the people of Los Angeles County; that until public enterprise has been given full opportunity to present plans, such as the Alweg Mono- rail Plan, to the proper governmental agencies there is no factual basis for finding that taxpayers support must be obtained before the general public of Los Angeles County can enjoy a rapid transit system. SECTION 4: That the City Council of the City of Temple City directs the City Clerk to forward this Resolution to the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County and to Governor Pat Brown. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 10th day of June, 1963. ATTEST: 390
