HomeMy Public PortalAboutTOL PR 2010-08-23 Willie Potter retirement Town of Leesburg News Release For Immediate Release Contact: Nancy Fixx Director of Human Resources nfixx@leesburgva.gov 703-771-2707 Leesburg Police Officer Willie Potter Retires After 21 Years of Service Leesburg, VA (August 23, 2010) – On September 1, 2010, Leesburg Police Officer Willie Potter will retire after 21 years of distinguished service with the Town of Leesburg. Officer Willie Potter began with the Town in July 1989 as a Patrol Officer. During his tenure with the Leesburg Police Department (LPD), Officer Potter served for five years as a Patrol Sergeant, four years as a School Resource Officer at Loudoun County High School, and over eight years as a Detective. At various times during his career, he was a member of the LPD SWAT/SOT team, a member of the joint LPD/LCSO Task Force, a gang investigator on the Northern Virginia Gang Task Force, a member of the Loudoun County Gang Intervention team, a member of the Juvenile Probation team, and a member of the LPD Criminal Investigations/Hostage Negotiations team. Officer Potter also served the LPD as a firearms instructor, a defensive tactics instructor and an AED/CPR instructor and program coordinator. He received numerous citations and awards, including the Medal of Valor, a Certificate of Valor, a Life Saving Medal, a Meritorious Unit Award and the LPD 911 Medal. “Master Police Office Potter devoted his entire career to keeping the citizens of Leesburg safe,” commented Joe Price, Leesburg’s Chief of Police. “Whether he was conducting complex criminal investigations, working to improve children’s safety in the schools, or developing and managing the department’s AED (Automated External Defibrillator) program, Willie dedicated himself to the Leesburg community. His impact on both our department and the Town will be long lasting.” TOL PR 2010-08-23 Willie Potter retirement Page 2 Prior to joining the Leesburg Police Department, Officer Potter served in the United States Marine Corps for ten years. After leaving active duty with the Marine Corps, he joined the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department. While a member of the MWAA Police Department, he attended the Northern Virginia Police Academy in Arlington, Virginia. # # #
