Town Unveils New “Leesburg: An Exploration Through Time”
Multi-Media Documentary on September 28, 2010
Leesburg, VA (September 21, 2010) – On Tuesday, September 28, 2010, the Town of Leesburg
will offer a special showing of the new documentary multi-media presentation, Leesburg: An
Exploration Through Time. The showing will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the Town Council
Chambers on the second floor of the Leesburg Town Hall (25 West Market Street). The
documentary runs approximately one hour.
In the wake of the Town’s 250th anniversary celebration in 2008, Town Manager John Wells
asked staff at the Thomas Balch Library to develop a presentation about the town’s history to
be used for new employee orientation. Stephanie Adams Hunter and Beth Schuster, library
employees assigned to the project, teamed with former library intern Matthew Exline to
transform what would have been a PowerPoint presentation into a multi-media documentary.
In the collaboration, Exline provided technical expertise and Hunter and Schuster provided
research support. Additional support for production of the documentary was provided by a
grant Thomas Balch Library received from Inova Loudoun Hospital Foundation and Loudoun
Laurels.
Leesburg: An Exploration Through Time illustrates the expansion of town government and
community evolution over 250 years. Topics range from the development of the town’s utility
system to citizens’ recollections of their World War II experiences to the Civil Rights Movement
in Leesburg. Thomas Balch Library’s collections provided much of the visual and research
material used in the documentary.
A second showing of the documentary will be offered on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at the
Thomas Balch Library (208 West Market Street) at 2:00 p.m.
