Leesburg Plans Two-Day Building Rehabilitation Workshop
Program to focus on restoration carpentry and wood window rehabilitation
Leesburg, VA (September 29, 2010) – The Town of Leesburg’s Planning & Zoning Department
and Board of Architectural Review will host a two-day workshop on restoration carpentry and
window rehabilitation and weatherization on Saturday, October 16, and Sunday, October 17,
2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. The program will take place in the lower level of
the Leesburg Town Hall at 25 West Market Street. Registration is $25.00 for both days.
Among the most significant challenges facing property owners today are deteriorating exterior
woodwork and old windows that are inefficient or do not function properly. This workshop is
designed to provide valuable information on how to effectively maintain a building, particularly
an historic structure, while preserving its historic or traditional character. With the current
trend toward “green” building, this workshop will emphasize that the “greenest” approaches
are to maintain and repair existing materials. The program is designed for participants ranging
from individual property owners to builders to members of local design review commissions.
The workshop is scheduled over two days to provide enough time to cover each of the two
topics, restoration carpentry and window rehabilitation. On Saturday, October 16, the
workshop will focus on restoration carpentry and will explore the impact of site conditions on
exterior woodwork, restoration treatments such as Dutchman repairs and consolidation with
epoxies, and appropriate paint treatments. The topic will change on Sunday, October 17, to
window rehabilitation. Here, participants will learn about the history and components of a
window and restoration of sash from removal to reinstallation. Appropriate weatherization
approaches will also be covered.

The program will be led by Duffy Hoffman, owner of Hoffman Painting and Refinishing. A third-
generation craftsman with more than 25 years of experience, Mr. Hoffman specializes in the
restoration of historic buildings. His work includes paint removal; interior and exterior painting;
plaster wall restoration; wallpaper installation; and shutter, door and window sash restoration.
His skills extend to restoration carpentry and millwork fabrication.
Mr. Hoffman’s projects have included the following landmark buildings: The Highlands (Fort
Washington, PA); The Sheldon House (home of John Witherspoon, signer of the Declaration of
Independence, Princeton, NJ); the Locktown Friends’ Church (NJ); the Cornwall Iron Furnace
(Cornwall, PA); and the Charles Carroll Manor House (home of another signer of the Declaration
of Independence, Ellicott City, MD). He has been featured in numerous newspaper and
magazine articles and twice on the HGTV program, “Restore America.” Mr. Hoffman serves on
the Board of Directors of the Preservation Trades Network and has conducted numerous
classes at the International Preservation Trades Workshop and the Traditional Building
Exhibition and Conference.
