AN ORDINANCE TO PROHIBIT THE FOLLOWING OF EMERGENCY VEHICLES.
WHEREAS, a hazard exists in the City of Richmond, Indiana,
caused by persons following certain emergency vehicles
which are traveling in response to emergency calls, and
WHEREAS, said hazard must be contained by prohibiting the
following of said emergency vehicles, and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of health, safety,
and public welfare of the citizens of the City of Richmond,
Indiana, that the following of said emergency vehicles be
prohibited.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the
City of Richmond, Indiana:
SECTION 1. Following Authorized Emergency Vehicle(s)
Prohibited. The driver of any motor vehicle other than one
on official business associated with the emergency response,
shall not follow any emergency vehicle(s) closer than
five hundred (500) feet while the flashers or sirens of
said emergency vehicle are in operation.
SECTION 2. Emergency Vehicles Defined. Emergency
vehicles as pertains to this ordinance are defined as:
Vehicles of the police department, ambulances operated
by or for health and hospital corporations and ambulances
and other vehicles used in emergency service which are
owned by persons, firms or corporations other than
hospitals which are designated as emergency vehicles
and are authorized to operate as such by the Public
Service Commission of Indiana.
SECTION 3. Penalties. Any person convicted of a violation
of this ordinance shall for first conviction thereof be
punished by a fine of not more than one hundred dollars
($100.00) or by imprisonment in the county jail for not
more than ten (10) days; upon a second and subsequent
conviction such person shall be punished by a fine of
not more than two hundred dollars ($200.00) or by im-
prisonment for not more than twenty (20) days in the
county jail, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
