COMMUNICATION AND GOAL SETTING WORKSHOP Recommendation: Th~s item has been placed on the agenda per the request of the C~ty Council Background: On January 17, 2006, the C~ty Council had teambudd~ng training The C~ty Council ~nstructed staff to schedule a follow up session on commumcat~on and a Goal Sethng Workshop as soon as possible In add~bon to the team building and goal setting, on June 3, 2006, some members of the C~ty Council ws~ted a number of s~tes w~th the D~rector of Redevelopment to obtain development ideas Discussion: Due to a number of scheduhng problems w~th the C~ty Councd members planned acbvit~es, the earhest that the requested sessions could be programmed was on June 16, 2006 and June 23, 2006 (both Fndays) The C~ty entered into an agreement w~th Wdham Bowen Consulbng for an amount not to exceed $15,000, to faclhtate these sessions and provide md~v~duahzed assistance to Councd members Fiscal Impact: The cost of these workshops plus mdtwdual~zed assistance may not exceed $15,000 The funds have been appropriated m the City Council's Budget Coordinated With: City Manager's Office, C~ty Attorney's Office, F~nance & Administration. Introduction to Communication Improvement B. Goal Setting Exercise Goals reflect items that the person or group setting the goals should recognize are items which the person or group have NOT attained, as yet. A goal is what you want but do not have. I F~rst you must set and have a GOAL. A goal is a known objective toward which actions are directed with the purpose of achievin,q the end. 2. Then there must be a known PURPOSE. A I~Url~ose is a lesser .qoal appivin.cl to specific activities or subiects. It often expresses future intentions. 3 Then there ~s POLICY or POLICIES. Policy consists of operational rules or ,quides for the or.qanization, which are not subiect to chan.qe. 4 PLANS. A plan is a short-ran,qe broad intention thou.qht up for the handlinq of a broad area to remedy it or expand itl or to obstruct or impede an opposition to expansion. 5. PROGRAMS. A program is a series of steps in sequence to carry out a plan. 6 PROJECTS. A proiect is a sequence of steps written to carry out one step of a program. 7 ORDERS. An order is a verbal or written direction to carry out a program step or apply ~eneral ~olic¥. 8 IDEAL SCENES. An ideal scene expresses what a scene or area ought to be. If one has not envisioned an ideal scene with which to compare the existing scene, he/she will not be able to recognize departures from it. 9 STATISTICS. A statistic is a number or amount compared to an earlier number or amount of the same thing. Statistics refer to the quantity of work done or the value of it. 10. VALUABLE FINAL PRODUCT. A Valuable Final Product is a product that can be exchanged for the services or goods of the society.
