Minutes Cemetery Resources Board Thursday, August 20, 2015 Members Present: Michael Shellman Sherri Cook Nancy Thompson Tim Theroff Council Liaison: Mark Schreiber Staff: David Grellner, Environmental Health Manager Don Beck, Property Inspector The Cemetery Resource Board met on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Small Conference Room, lower level of the John G. Christy Municipal Building, 320 E. McCarty Street, Jefferson City, Missouri. Nancy Thompson called the meeting to order. A quorum was present. Approval of Minutes: A motion was made for approval of the minutes from the June 18, 2015 meeting by Tim Theroff, Michael Shellman seconded. Minutes were approved. Old Business: David Grellner gave progress on flag pole project and also discussed pricing of the Carrie Crittenden grave marker with the Cemetery Resource Board. Discussion occurred about the size and type of stone that would be appropriate and economical. Election of Officers for Current Year: Nancy Thompson was elected Chairman of the Cemetery Resource Board and Michael Shellman was elected Vice-Chairman of the Cemetery Resource Board. New Business: Nancy Thompson discussed identifying veteran burials in Woodland/Old City Cemetery. Nancy is currently working through a list and identifying burial sites of veterans and stones that needed placed. Tim Theroff asked for a description of how the cemeteries are laid out and their historical background. Don Beck gave a history description of each cemetery and also explained details about the procedures for burial of cremated remains. Sherri Cook and Nancy Thompson discussed the planting of flowers in the Woodland/Old City Cemetery and possible help from the Master Gardeners, Girl Scouts, and the local Future Farmers of America Chapter. Examples were shown of flower beds that could be planted in some of the grave marker beds. Discussion also occurred about the future of Longview Cemetery and how many grave sites were still available. Minutes of the city of Jefferson Cemetery Resources Board pg.2 August 20,2015 An onsite tour of Longview Cemetery was conducted. There were sections of the cemetery discussed by members including the Hedge Grove cemetery stones, Lincoln University section, and prisoner section. Discussion also occurred about the over decorating of grave sites with landscaping material and other items. Two examples were looked at in the cemetery. Board and staff agreed to notify the family members and explain what is allowed as far as landscaping and decorations. Other topics and issues: The next Cemetery Resource Board meeting was set for Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Adjournment: With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
