HomeMy Public PortalAboutLBT Minutes 2002 10/09McCall Public Library Recording of meeting 10/09/02 Agenda 1) Keys to Effective Applied Strategic Planning 2) Review Mission Statement 3) Review where we have been, where are going a) Setting the stage, planning, implementation b) Now at the beginning of planning — "business modeling" 4) Visioning exercise 5) Key result areas a) Identify b) Discuss c) Critical Success indicators (we got this far on the first and second KRA). 6) Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats 7) Action steps (brainstorm) 5 a) We decided to begin at once to become more knowledgeable about "districting" as a possible action step with a possible meeting with Marge on Thursday, November 7th 8) Wind down Keys to Effective Applied Strategic Planning • Base decisions on values • Make the mission crystal clear • Sound a rallying cry! • Promote and reward o Involvement o Risk taking o Donations of time, talent, treasure • Empower people — all people • Persevere • Monitor and manage "down board". • Maintain a market focus Business Modeling Definition (I inadvertently skipped this section, worth putting in anyway) Business modeling is..."the process by which the organization more specifically defines success in the context of the business it wants to be in, how that success will be measured, what will be done to achieve this success, and what kind of organizational structure/culture is necessary to achieve this success, while remaining consistent with the newly established mission statement" Visioning Exercise (What might occur that would make us burst with pride and a sense of accomplishment?) 1) Building dedication makes big news 2) Foundation and endowment reach big bucks goal ($5 million) 3) Rural Library association is cooking with us providing the gas 4) MPL achieves statewide recognition for outreach programs 5) Anne Kantola is nominated and selected as "Librarian of the Year" 6) McCall Public Library i,.s recognized by the City Council and impact area residents as a key resource to the area. 7) "Friends of the Library break fund raising goal and has a waiting list for those who want to be members. 8) Statesman publishes an article on the McCall Public Library. 9) McCall Public Library children's program becomes local and then national model of excellence 10) Simplot names library for $5 MM endowment in a testamentary bequest. Key Result Areas 1. Perceived as a Key Community Resource by more people, including city government 2. More $ in budget — endowment, private annual support, government support 3. Knowing and meeting patrons and potential patrons real needs 4. Effective outreach, especially kids, seniors, marginal groups 5. Building plus accessible resources that are appropriate to our function in the community Critical Success Indicators for KRA's 1) Perception a) Head count/circulation index, computer usage show progress b) (once automation is finished) on-line hits show progress c) Community wide survey results show progress d) Financial support is a vote of confidence — how deep, how broad, shows progress e) City council perceptions gauged i) Interviews ii) Questionnaires iii) Acceptance of invitations to library events 2) Financial support a) Convening of an "endowment committee" b) $ donated i) to Friends ii) to Library (which is held by city under current arrangements) c) (there may well be more — to be continued)
