Richmond Author to Discuss History of Gerrymandering at
Thomas Balch Library
Leesburg, VA (September 16, 2019) – Richmond author Brent
Tarter will hold a lecture on gerrymandering, a practice
intended to establish a political advantage, at the Thomas
Balch Library on Sunday, September 22, 2019.
He will discuss his latest book, “The Grandees of Government
and Gerrymanders: How Redistricting has Protected Slavery,
White Supremacy, and Political Minorities in Virginia,” which
focuses on Virginia’s long history of gerrymandering and its
influence on the state’s politics, while providing perspective
on how the practice impacts politics nationally.
Offering the first in-depth historical study of gerrymanders in
Virginia, Tarter exposes practices going back to nineteenth
century and colonial times and explains how they protected
land and slave owners’ interests.
The lecture is open to the public and will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information, call
the Thomas Balch Library at 703-737-7195.
