Leesburg Executive Airport Receives $900,000 Federal Grant
Grant will fund runway and taxiway lighting rehabilition.
Leesburg, VA (June 28, 2019) – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently announced
the award of $900,000 to the Leesburg Executive Airport, through its Airport Improvement
Program.
The grant funding will be used to rehabilitate the airport’s aging runway and taxiway lighting
system. The upgrade will include a new control system and installing LED lights where approved
to replace the current traditional incandescent lights.
“These improvements will increase the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the airfield lighting
system,” says Airport Director Scott Coffman. “New technology in airfield lighting will reduce
electrical costs and maintenance requirements, while ensuring the airport is visible to landing
aircraft in all weather conditions.”
The total project cost is estimated to be approximately $1 million. In addition to the federal
funding, the Town expects to receive a grant from the Virginia Department of Aviation equal to
8% of the total project cost. Town officials anticipate that the project will begin construction
later this summer and will be completed by the end of the year.
