Following the sale and removal of Brian Kirk’s “Cryptos” sculpture from the ArtsPARKs Sculpture
Trail last year, the Leesburg Commission on Public Art (COPA) issued a call to artists for a
replacement sculpture. COPA selected Jim Koenig’s “Kool Dudes,” which portrays three figures
on skateboards made from locally sourced cedar. The Town Council approved the selection and
“Kool Dudes” was installed in February.
For more than 20 years, Jim Koenig has been creating art from natural and manmade objects
found while hiking the region’s mountains, woodlands, and riverbanks, as well as walking the
streets and sidewalks of the area’s towns. He is currently the featured artist at the Gateway
Gallery in Round Hill, and his works have been displayed at the Jefferson County Musuem in
Charles Town, WV; the Harpers Ferry National Park bookstore; and the annual Waterford Fair in
Waterford, VA.
The ArtsPARKs Sculpture Trail is a collaboration between COPA and FOLPA. Other sculptures
currently on display were unveiled in the summer of 2018. All the sculptures are available for
purchase. Twenty percent of the proceeds from the sales will be invested in the ArtsPARKs
program, paving the way for new artists to exhibit their work in subsequent years. The
ArtsPARKs Sculpture Trail is part of the Loudoun County Artisan Trail network.
