RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE LEGISLATURE
TO INCREASE THE INCOME LIMITATION FOR A
SENIOR CITIZEN'S PROPERTY TAX DEDUCTION
WHEREAS, under the current state statute that allows senior citizen
property tax deduction, eligibility is not only dependent upon age, but
also upon income; and
WHEREAS, in order for a senior citizen to be eligible for the senior
citizen deduction on property taxes, their income cannot be higher than
$10,000.00 per year; and
WHEREAS, a large majority of these senior citizens are attempting to
keep and maintain their properties, which have been their family homes
for many years, while property taxes are consuming a large portion of
their income; and
WHEREAS, the inequity of such a low income limitation has become
obvious to the Borough of Carteret in recent months, by the complaints
of the senior citizens that only slightly exceed that income limitation set
by State Statute; and
WHEREAS, the Borough of Carteret believes that the income limitation
set by the statute should be investigated and researched in an effort to
formulate cost of living adjustments,
WHEREAS, it is the belief of the Borough of Carteret that the current
system of determining eligibility for a senior citizen tax deduction has
not been reviewed researched or increased since the early 1970's.
