Leesburg Police Detective Doug Shaw Receives
Commendation Medal
Leesburg, VA (November 23, 2010) – On
Saturday, November 19, 2010, Detective
Doug Shaw of the Leesburg Police
Department was awarded the Law
Enforcement Commendation Medal by the
Colonel James Wood II Chapter of the
Virginia Society of the Sons of the American
Revolution (VASSAR). The Law Enforcement
Commendation Medal is awarded for
accomplishments and/or outstanding
contributions in an area of law enforcement.
Detective Shaw is a member of the
department’s Crisis Intervention Team, and
in that capacity served as the primary
negotiator during a botched robbery in July
2009 where two elderly members of the Leesburg community were held hostage by a gunman
who threatened them with great harm. Detective Shaw was effectively able to utilize his
communication skills and negotiation training to bring about the release of the two hostages
and the peaceful surrender of an armed and dangerous felon.
In August of this year, Detective Shaw served as the lead investigator in the Serial Stabber /
Killer case. Through his leadership, investigative skill and dedication to duty, Detective Shaw
and his team quickly linked the three Leesburg assaults to multiple cases in the Flint, Michigan
area, including five homicides.
Leesburg Police Chief Joseph Price said that “while both of these cases were major, they are but
a representative sample of Detective Doug Shaw’s professionalism. He epitomizes the modern
police officer who uses technology to maximize successful criminal investigations, but also
understands that basic ‘shoe leather’ investigative tactics are just as important.”
