Leesburg Town Council Provides Tax Relief to Businesses
Council delays payment of certain business taxes.
Leesburg, VA (April 17, 2020) – In the previous version of this news release, published on April
15, 2020, the revised payment due date for business license renewals was incorrect.
At the Town Council meeting on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, the Leesburg Town Council adopted
several measures aimed at providing financial relief to the town’s businesses.
The council delayed the due date for payment of 1st quarter transient occupancy taxes and
meals and beverage taxes, collected by hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores in January
through March 2020, by 30 days and allowed businesses an additional 60 days to pay with no
penalty. Businesses must file by the original due date of April 20, but will not be charged
penalties or interest on the amount due if they pay by July 20, 2020. Businesses that file by
April 20 and pay by May 20 will receive the 5% on-time payment discount. The council
approved the same relief program for taxes collected during April, May, and June, and originally
due on July 20, 2020.
In addition, the council pushed the due date for annual business license renewals back from
May 1 to July 30, 2020. Businesses must file by May 1, but will not be charged penalties or
interest for 90 days.
In March, Loudoun County extended the due date for personal property taxes from May 5 to
June 5. Since the county now bills and collects personal property taxes for the town, this
extension is already in place for town businesses.
“In reaching out to our existing businesses, we received requests from those who are struggling
to stay afloat during these difficult times,” noted Russell Seymour, the Town’s Economic
Development Director. “With little money coming in, it was going to be very difficult for some
businesses to make these payments on time. The delays give them a little breathing room while
awaiting more substantial relief from the federal government through the Small Business
Administration loan program.”
Businesses with questions regarding tax relief measures should contact the Town at
