Award Winning Lecturer Jason Nichols Scheduled to Appear at
Thomas Balch Library
Leesburg, VA (February 14, 2020) – In celebration of Black
History Month, the Thomas Balch Library will host Jason
Nichols, an award winning full-time lecturer, in the African
American Studies Department at the University of Maryland
College Park (UMCP), on Sunday, February 23, 2020.
Nichols will lead a discussion on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
and the Vietnam War along with the intersection of
domestic civil rights and international peace.
The free event begins at 2 p.m. in the lower level meeting
room of the Thomas Balch Library. For more information,

Nichols was the longtime editor-in-chief of Words Beats & Life: The Global Journal of Hip-Hop
Culture, the first peer-reviewed journal of Hip-hop Studies. He co-edited La Verdad: An
International Dialogue on Hip-Hop Latinidades. In 2018, the Office of Multicultural Student
Education gave Nichols the Academic Excellence Award for Outstanding Faculty and the Student
Success Leadership Council awarded him the M. Lucia James Impact Award. In 2015, Nichols
was given the Faculty Advisor of the Year Award by the UMCP NAACP. Nichols, a progressive
political and social analyst, has been featured in publications such as The Guardian,
Independent Journal Review, The Baltimore Afro, and The Baltimore Sun and currently cohosts
"The Fifth Element" talk radio show on WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington, DC.
