Thomas Balch Library Offers Free Seminar on Care and
Preservation of Textiles on February 6, 2020
Learn how to store and preserve family heirlooms.
Leesburg, VA (January 31, 2020) – Do you have old family
dresses, uniforms, quilts, or baby clothes that you would like to
preserve? MC Mairena, Senior Library Associate with the
Thomas Balch Library, will present a free seminar on Thursday,
February 6, 2020, covering the basic techniques for the care
and storing of your family textile heirlooms.
Maria Christina Mairena has her PhD in History from Catholic
University, an MA in Theological Studies from Virginia
Theological Seminary, and a BA in History from George Mason
University. Her career includes working as a civilian employee
with the military in museums, collections, and research and as
an adjunct instructor at George Mason. Mairena, who has
extensive experience with cataloging and preserving military
collections, will discuss the care and preservation of military
uniforms and flags, as well as more common items such as
clothing, shoes, samplers and other textiles.
The free, two-hour seminar will begin at 10 a.m. and will be held in the lower level of the
Thomas Balch Library (208 W Market St). For more information, visit
