Minutes Cemetery Resources Board Meeting Thursday, October 29, 2015 Members Present: Nancy Thompson, Chair Michael Shellman, Vice-Chair Sherri Cook Pat Rowe Kerr Members Absent: Tim Theroff Mayor: Carrie Tergin Staff: David Grellner, Environmental Health Manager Don Beck, Property Inspector Nancy Thompson called the meeting to order. A quorum was present. The Cemetery Resource Board met on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Small Conference Room, lower level of the John G. Christy Municipal Building, 320 E. McCarty Street, Jefferson City, Missouri. Approval of the Minutes: A motion was made for the approval of the minutes from the September 24, 2015 meeting by Michael Shellman, Sherri Cook seconded. Minutes were approved. Old Business: David Grellner discussed the removal of the large maple tree in Woodland Cemetery. Hentges Tree Service was awarded the bid to remove the tree. Discussion also came up about the over decorated graves at Longview Cemetery. David stated the person has been contacted and explained the decoration guidelines. An extension was given for removal of the decoration due to the return of the notice letter by the postal service and no forwarding address. New Business: David Grellner presented to the Cemetery Resources Board a list of cemetery maintenance and decoration guidelines. The Board reviewed the guidelines and offered suggestions to enhance it. Nancy Thompson discussed the meeting with Dr. Ruthi Sturdevant, Craig Sturdevant, John Carroll and Lt. Colonel Ray Ferguson concerning the location of burials in the western section of Old City Cemetery. Discussion also occurred about how many names can be placed on the Gone But Not Forgotten Monument if names are brought forth from this project. Also discussed was how to obtain donations for this project from different avenues such as press stories, advertisements, etc. Nancy discussed the upcoming meeting with the Department of Natural Resources to obtain grant funding for these projects. Minutes of the City of Jefferson Cemetery Resources Board pg.2 October 29,2015 Nancy also discussed funding for the Carrie Crittenden Stone to place a monument in Woodland Cemetery. Discussion then occurred about the State of Missouri burial plot and the law that governs its maintenance. Discussion also occurred between Board members and staff about identifying veterans and placing unknown veteran markers along the wall between National Cemetery and Woodland Cemetery. Don Beck discussed the Longview Cemetery record book. Pat Rowe Kerr discussed putting veteran flags on graves and also discussed participation from other organizations such as the Navel Sea Cadets. Also discussion occurred about putting wreaths on the veteran's graves. Mayor Tergin came to the meeting and said she would give a letter of recommendation to help support the Cemetery Resources Board projects. She also offered the Cemetery Board to come to the Council Meetings to give updates on projects. Pat also mentioned funeral homes for donations. Families could possibly donate to cemetery causes when making arrangements for loved ones. Other topics and issues: The next Cemetery Resource Board meeting was set for Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Small Conference Room at City Hall.
