A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF CARSON,
CALIFORNIA, EXPRESSING SYMPATHY TO THE VICTIMS OF
THE DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE IN NEPAL
WHEREAS, on April 25, 2015, a massive 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal, affecting millions
of lives and claiming thousands; and
WHEREAS, the epicenter was in Lainjung District, northwest of Kathmandu; and
WHEREAS, such earthquake was the strongest to hit Nepal in 80 years; and
WHEREAS, the earthquake has caused landslides and avalanches; and
WHEREAS, over 8 million people are affected in 39 of Nepal's 75 districts, with over 2
million people living in the I I most critically hit districts; and
WHEREAS, to date, the earthquake caused almost 6,000 deaths and over 10,000 people
have been injured; and
WHEREAS, these figures are expected to increase as more areas are reached and
information becomes available; and
WHEREAS, strong aftershocks continue to threaten the lives of the people; and
WHEREAS, the tremors have damaged infrastructure, including bridges and access
roads;and
WHEREAS, many people are afraid and have slept outside for several consecutive
nights, in spite of the rain; and
WHEREAS, countries from all over the world, including the United States, continue to
send search and rescue teams to help the Nepalese government look for survivors; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations has launched a $415 million urgent appeal to help the 8
million people affected by the earthquake for the next three months; and
WHEREAS, global relief efforts are growing; and
WHEREAS, the City of Carson sympathizes with the Nepalese nation in this very
difficult time.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor, Council, and Citizens of
Carson, California, formally express their deepest sympathies to the victims and families of the
devastating earthquake in Nepal.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF CARSON, CALIFORNIA, EXPRESSING
SYMPATHY TO THE VICTIMS OF THE DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE IN NEPAL.
1. SUMMARY
This item is placed on the agenda at the request of Mayor Pro Tern Elito M. Santarina.
On April 25, 2015, a massive 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal, with epicenter in Lamjung
District, northwest of Kathmandu. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Nepal in 80 years.
Over 8 million people are affected in 39 of the 75 districts of Nepal. Death toll has reached
almost 6,000 and over 10,000 people have been injured. These figures are expected to
increase as more areas are reached and information becomes available.
Mayor Pro Tern Elito M. Santarina is requesting the City to formally express its deepest
sympathy to the people of Nepal, especially to the earthquake victims and their families,
through a City Council resolution to that effect.
11. RECOMMENDATION
1. WAIVE further reading and ADOPT Resolution No. 15-063, "A RESOLUTION OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF CARSON, CALIFORNIA, EXPRESSING SYMPATHY TO THE
VICTIMS OF THE DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE IN NEPAL."
2. Send a copy of this Resolution to the Consulate General of Nepal to the United States.

IV. BACKGROUND
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, 2015, affecting millions of lives and
claiming thousands. The earthquake has caused several landslides and avalanches.
Strong aftershocks threaten the lives of over 8 million people in Nepal.
Countries from all over the world, including the United States, continue to send search and
rescue teams to help the Nepalese government look for survivors. In addition, massive
disaster relief efforts from the international community are ongoing.
In view of the foregoing, the City of Carson, through the recommendation of Mayor Pro
Tern Elito Santarina, wishes to express its deepest sympathy to all the people affected by
this devastating earthquake.
