A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CARSON, CALIFORNIA RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF
MARCH AS RED CROSS AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS, since 194' ) the President of the United States has recognized March as Red
Cross Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, Red Cross Awareness Month observes the American Red Cross as a true
reflection of the humanitarian and volunteer spirit and calls on Americans to make a donation,
volunteer, take a class or give blood; and
WHEREAS, in 2014 the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region provided disaster
relief assistance to 600 families and supported 2,016 clients by providing shelter, food, emotional
support and other necessities; and
WHEREAS, the American Red Cross is chartered by Congress to provide family
communications and other support to active duty members of the military and has done so for
130 years; and
WHEREAS, in 2014 nearly 125,473 individuals locally were trained in CPR, First Aid,
aquatics, babysitting, wilderness First Aid and water safety courses; and
WHEREAS, the American Red Cross encourages individuals, families and businesses to
prepare themselves for disasters by getting an emergency kit, making a plan, and being informed
through preparedness education classes;
WHEREAS, across Southern California, the American Red Cross provided 400,000
potentially lifesaving blood products for patients in need in 2014;
WHEREAS, 4,470 volunteers helped provide direct service to the community locally;
WHEREAS, thanks to the support of the Los Angeles community, the American Red
Cross is there when needed most;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City Council of the City of Carson, California,
hereby proclaims March 2015 as American Red Cross Awareness Month and urges all citizens to
show their support to the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region.

CONSIDERATION OF RESOLUTION NO. 15-038 IN SUPPORT OF AMERICAN RED
CROSS AWARENESS MONTH
I. SUMMARY
This item is on the agenda at the request of Mayor Pro Tem Santarina.
I` March is American Red Cross Awareness month. In recognition of the organization's
mission to prevent, prepare for respond to and recover from emergencies, the Director of
the Greater Long Beach Chapter has requested the City Council pass Resolution 15-038.
II. RECOMMENDATION
TAKE the following actions:
1. WAIVE further reading and ADOPT Resolution No. 15-038, "A RESOLUTION OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON, CALIFORNIA, RECOGNIZING THE
MONTH OF MARCH AS AMERICAN RED CROSS AWARENESS MONTH"
2. INSTRUCT staff to transmit a copy of the executed resolution to Margaret Arbini
Madonna, Executive Director of the American Red Cross, Greater Long Beach Chapter
at Margaret.Arbini-Madonna@redcross.org.

IV. BACKGROUND
As part of American Red Cross (ARC) "Prepare SoCal" campaign, ARC is reaching out to
cities across the region encouraging citizens to prepare for emergencies in their homes,
businesses, schools and places of worship and to consider opportunities to support ARC's
mission by donating funds, blood or time.
In addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers services in five other
areas: community services that help the needy; communications services and comfort for
military members and their family members; the collection, processing and distribution of
blood and blood products; educational programs on preparedness, health, and safety; and
international relief and development programs.
