HomeMy Public PortalAbout2004-174 (10-05-04)Resolution 2004-174 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD OPPOSING THE CLOSURE OF THE TRAUMA UNIT AT KING DREW MEDICAL CENTER WHEREAS, The County of Los Angeles currently has thirteen trauma centers which by definition are expected to have appropriate equipment and supplies and be - capable of providing prompt initial evaluation and definitive treatment of all trauma I patients, who have sustained critical injuries; and i ~ WHEREAS, The list of critical trauma patients include those with major blood v loss and/or shock as a result of vehicular accidents, gunshot or knife wounds, falls, or other violent incidents who require prompt surgical intervention; and WHEREAS, King Drew Medical center is the second busiest trauma center in the County and presently treats approximately 47,000 emergency room and 2,100 trauma patients annually; and WHEREAS, During the September 21, 2004 meeting of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the board voted to move forward with the potential closure of the trauma unit of King Drew Medical Center by voting to schedule a public hearing to consider closure of the unit: and WHEREAS, There are only two other trauma centers within 11 miles of King Drew: Harbor UCLA and St. Francis Medical Center; and WHEREAS, The closure of the trauma center at King Drew will have a negative impact on the City of Lynwood based on the overall threat to public safety for delayed treatment; increasing the number of patients and wait times for those in critical need at St. Francis Medical Center; and further overburdening the infrastructure, traffic and circulation in a heavily congested area. r NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD DOES HEREBY FIND, PROCLAIM, ORDER AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. That the City Manager or his designee is authorized to carry out any transactions as so ordered by this resolution. Section 2. That the City of Lynwood opposes the closure of the trauma unit and King Drew Medical Center. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
