HomeMy Public PortalAbout15-089RESOLUTION NO. 15-089 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON, CALIFORNIA, EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO GOVERNOR EDMUND G. BROWN, JR. FOR SIGNING INTO LAW ASSEMBLY BILL 7 (BONTA) WHICH ESTABLISHES LARRY ITLIONG DAY IN CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, Assembly Bill (AB) 7 was introduced by Assemblymember Rob Bonta in December 2014; and WHEREAS, the bill requires the Governor to annually proclaim October 25 as Larry Itliong Day in California, designates that date of each year as having special significance in public schools and educational institutions, and encourages those entities to observe that date by conducting exercises remembering the life of Larry Itliong and the contributions he made to the state; and WHEREAS, on June 30, 2015, Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. signed into law AB 7. - and WHEREAS, even before AB 7 was introduced, the City of Carson had already begun its observance of Larry Itliong Day through Resolution No. 10-108 which was adopted by the City Council on October 5, 2010, making Carson the first city in the United States to recognize October 25 as Larry Iltiong Day; and WHEREAS, Larry Itliong was one of the leaders of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), a union fighting for the right of farmworkers. Led by Iltiong, AWOC was the first union to strike for improved wages and working conditions in Delano in 1965. This launched the California farm labor movement.- and WHEREAS, AWOC and the National Farm Workers Association, led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, joined forces soon thereafter, at the urging of Itliong, to start the now internationally -famous United Farm Workers of America. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Council of the City of Carson, California, forinally express their appreciation to Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. for signing into law AB 7; and RESOLVED FURTHER that a copy of this resolution be sent to Governor Brown.
