Leesburg Boy Shines at Regional Punt, Pass & Kick
Competition
Leesburg, VA (December 16, 2010) – Nicholas
Barts, a nine‐year‐old from Leesburg, recently
placed second in the Washington Redskins Team
Championship Punt, Pass & Kick competition.
The NFL’s Punt, Pass & Kick (PPK) program is a
national skills competition for boys and girls
between the ages of 6 and 15 to compete
individually against their peers. Competitors begin
at a local school or community event. The top
finisher from each local competition advances to
the Sectional level. At the Sectional level, only the
top four finishers from the entire pool of Sectional
competitions for each Team Championship advance
to the Team Championship level. Every NFL team
hosts a Team Championship competition, with the
top four finishers from all Team Championships
across the country moving onto the National Finals.
The son of Bobby and Beth Barts, Nick began playing football with the Town of Leesburg Parks
& Recreation Department’s flag football program as a 6‐year old, and has participated in the
program for four years. In September of this year, Nick placed first in his age group at the Local
PPK Competition at Sycolin Creek Elementary School. In October, he won the Sectional
competition at Patawomeck Park in Stafford, Virginia, which qualified him to move forward to
the Team Championship level.
The Washington Redskins Team Championship PPK was held during halftime of the
Washington‐Tampa Bay game at FedEx Field on December 12, 2010. Nick took second place
with a combined score of 207.11. His punt was 54 feet, his place kick was 69.5 feet and his pass
was 84.6 feet.

“It was great to go as far as I did this year,” said Nick, whose favorite NFL player is Drew Brees
of the New Orleans Saints. “It was exciting and I’m looking forward to doing it again next year.”
“It’s wonderful to see Nick succeed at this level of competition,” commented Kevin Roudabush,
supervisor of Leesburg Parks & Recreation’s Sports Programs. “Nick has been a regular
participant in our flag football program and our summer football camps. I think his success is a
true testament to the positive effect the Town’s recreation and sports programs have on the
youth in our community.”
Although Leesburg Parks & Recreation did not sponsor a local PPK competition this year, the
department has sponsored local competitions in the past and staff actively encourages sports
program participants to compete.
