HomeMy Public PortalAbout2008.047 (04-01-08)RESOLUTION NO. 2008.047 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD IN SUPPORT OF PARK WATER COMPANY'S PROPOSAL TO FIRST 5 LA FOR ORAL HEALTH COMMUNITY .DEVELOPMENT PROJECT FUNDING TO CONSTRUCT FLUORIDATION INFRASTRUCTURE ~, WHEREAS, the City of Lynwood supports the U.S. Public Health Services' national campaign to increase the proportion of the U.S. population served by community water systems with optimally fluoridated water; and WHEREAS, California Assembly Bill (AB) 733 signed into law in 1995 requires all public water systems with 10,000 or more service connections to fluoridate their systems, provided that funding for the project costs come from a source other than the water system's own usual funding sources; and WHEREAS, AB 733 also mandates fluoridation of California's public water systems with an ultimate goal to decrease dental caries which will create a potential cost-savings to taxpayers of approximately $80 million annually; and WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water. District of Southern California began adjusting the natural fluoride level in the water it supplies to its member agencies in November 2007; and WHEREAS, approximately 80% of the water supplied from Park Water Company to its customers, which includes a portion of the City of Lynwood, comes from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) and 20% from wells; and ''-~ WHEREAS, the installation of fluoride treatment facilities at Park Water Company will enable Park Water Company to match the optimal fluoride level in 80 percent of the water they currently provide that is obtained from the MWD; and WHEREAS, funds are available in Los Angeles County from First 5 LA, a public entity formed to develop and oversee various early childhood initiatives and to manage the funding from Prop 10, which was passed by the California voters in 1998, and added a 50-cent tax on all tobacco products for the purpose of promoting, supporting, and improving the early development of children from the prenatal stage through age five. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD DOES HERBY RESOLVE AND DETERMINE AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The City Council of the City of Lynwood fully supports efforts by Park Water Company to seek and obtain First 5 Los Angeles Oral Health Community Development Project grant funding for the installation of fluoride treatment facilities at Park Water Company wells. Section 2. That copies of this resolution be forwarded to the Park Water Company and to First 5 LA. Section 3. That this resolution be given effect immediately upon adoption.
