HomeMy Public PortalAboutXXX CITY OF TYBEE ISLAND Bicycle Friendly Committee Minutes October 11, 2011 11AM Members in attendance: Co-Chair Denise Dubuque, Diane Schleicher, Chantel Morton, Sunny Brown, Jan LeViner and Michael Bodine. Councilmen Paul Wolff and Bill Garbett were also present. Co-Chair Kyle Pratt and Chief Bob Bryson were excused. Chair Dubuque called the meeting to order. City Manager Schleicher made a motion to approve the minutes with a correction: “Corp permits may significantly slow the process.” The motion was seconded and unanimously approved. City Manager Schleicher reviewed her Bicycle Summit presentation from last weekend: Bicycle Friendly Point System is based on 200 points: Bronze 80-120, Silver 120-140, Gold 140-160, Platinum 160+. Scores are not publicized to the candidates. Tybee’s score would most likely improve if a main corridor was designated as the bicycle route. Possibly conduct another survey of residents via Survey Monkey addressing bicycle rider motivation and increasing ridership. Other cities have set volunteer counters for lights, helmets, riders, and pedestrians. Diane stated that there were no committees in the state, other than Tybee, that had Bicycle Friendly Committee meetings on a monthly basis. She also addressed recruiting committee members from the community. Tybee is one of three state-wide communities with on street parking (Savannah and Decatur are the others); bicycle parking enhances street view exposure, allows for more patrons than a vehicle, and creates a “buzz”. City Manager suggested DOT Share the Road signage at Bull River and Lazaretto Creek Bridges. Michael Bodine offered to attempt a social visit to the New Belgium Brewery while he is on vacation in Denver. The New Belgium Brewery is an active bicycle friendly campaigner. First Street Bike Route: Joe Wilson reported to the City Manager that there was one more pole re-location that would take place in February. Denise noted upcoming bicycle friendly events: the Joyce Harrison Memorial Poker Run 11/13/11, Bike to Beer (sponsored by Savannah Bicycle Campaign) and Social Club and Fat Tire Bikes sponsoring Thursday Bicycle Nights. A motion was made to adjourn, seconded and approved.
