Cemetery Resource Board Meeting

Nancy Thompson called the meeting to order. A quorum was present.
The Cemetery Resource Board met on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the
Small Conference Room, lower level of the John G. Christy Municipal Building, 320 E. McCarty
Street, Jefferson City, Missouri.
Approval of the Minutes:
A motion was made for the approval of the minutes from the October 29, 2015 meeting by
Michael Shellman, Tim Theroff seconded. Minutes were approved.
Old Business:
David Grellner gave a maintenance update for the cemeteries. The large maple tree in
Woodland Cemetery is still scheduled to be removed when all the paperwork is completed.
Several new graves have been dug in Longview Cemetery and the recent rainfall has settled the
graves nicely. He also announced that Lamberson Lawn Care was selected for the cemetery
maintenance contract. Tim Theroff asked about the grave decorations at Longview and David
explained what had happened with the situation.
Nancy Thompson gave an update on the help received from the Lincoln University ROTC. The
Lincoln ROTC will be coming back next spring to help with projects in the cemetery. The
students will be using the cemetery to complete class projects on the history of individuals
buried in Old City Cemetery. Nancy also talked about the technology that Dr. Sturdevant from
Lincoln University will be using to help find grave sites in Old City Cemetery.
New Business:
Nancy Thompson discussed the meeting with the Department of Natural Resources
representative Amanda Burke. The Cemetery Resource Board is considering applying for a
grant from the department to further projects in the cemeteries. Nancy also mentioned a pass
through grant for the State of Missouri plot in Woodland Cemetery. She also stated that the

Department of Natural Resources may be interested in using Woodland and Old City Cemetery
as training grounds for preservationists across the State of Missouri.
Nancy mentioned that Mayor Tergin had called her and was interested in bringing information to
the Friends of the Governor's Mansion concerning the Carrie Crittenden Monument that the
board would like to see erected in Woodland Cemetery.
Nancy also discussed about working with Colonel Ferguson about a ceremony for Lincoln's
150th Anniversary coming up next year and having the students present information about the
individuals in the Old City Cemetery they are researching history on for a class project. Also a
pamphlet was discussed to be made for a self -guided tour for visitors to learn about individuals
buried in the cemeteries. Sherri Cook and Nancy talked about an Eagle Scout Project for
painting the iron fences in the cemetery.
Michael Shellman mentioned the flag pole light needed an adjustment and the leaves have
accumulated on the sidewalk at Woodland/Old City Cemetery. David Grellner stated the leaves
will be taken care of by the contractor and the light will be adjusted.
The Cemetery Board and staff discussed setting up meetings for 2016. It was discussed to
have meetings on the third Thursday of the month at 10:00 a.m. at City Hall.
Other topics and issues:
The next Cemetery Resource Board meeting was set for Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 10:00
a.m. in the Small Conference Room at City Hall.
