A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CARSON, CALIFORNIA, PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF
APRIL, 2017, TO BE "FAIR HOUSING MONTH".
WHEREAS, April 11, 2017 marks the 49`h anniversary of the passage of the federal Fair
Housing Act, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended, which enunciates a national
commitment to fair housing without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin,
familial status or disability; and
WHEREAS, the California Fair Employment and Housing Act of 1963, as amended, offers
additional protection for fair housing without regard to marital status, age, source of income,
sexual orientation, medical condition or other arbitrary status; and
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires
local governments, as a condition of receiving Department funding, to take steps to affirmatively
further fair housing within their jurisdictions; and
WHEREAS, the City of Carson, through our Fair Housing program, in partnership with the
Housing Rights Center, is committed to the advancement of federal and state fair housing laws,
by continuing to address discrimination in our community, to support programs that educate the
public about the right to equal housing opportunities, and to partner with other organizations to
help assure every American of his/her right to fair housing; and
WHEREAS, the City of Carson acknowledges the efforts of the United States Department of
Housing and Urban Development, the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing,
and countless other state agencies, local governments, and community members for promoting
fair housing;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we the City of Carson City Council, hereby
join the national celebration and proclaim the month of April, 2017 to be "FAIR HOUSING
MONTH" on behalf of the City of Carson, and urge all agencies, institutions, and individuals to
take due note of the observance through continued efforts to eliminate housing discrimination in
our communities and to abide by the letter and the spirit of federal and state fair housing laws.
