A special meeting of the Bat Harbour Village Council was held
Monday, May 18, 1953, at 10:00 o'clock A. M., forthe"purpose of inducting
the council members into office.
There were present: Messrs. Beatty, Stokely and
Dr..Leonard and councilman
elect Collins.
Also present were W. H. Webb, Villaga Manager; Mary Wetterer,
Village Clerk; and Fred Baisden, Village Attorney.
The Mayor, Mr. Edward _G..Stokely, called the meeting to order
and asked for a report of the election held May 5,.1953.
Miss Wetterer, the Village Clerk, reported that at the close of
the election the ballots were counted by the election clerks, B:Aare R.
Whitman and Mary F. Torrado, and herself in the presence of witnesse4 and
that forty-nine (49) votes were cast out of a possible'eighty siij$0),
0f these John.F. Beatty received 29.votes; Harry A..Brown,:29,•'Charles11.
Collins, 31; and David W. Exley, 1. .
.The Clerk informed the council that under the.terms o the char- -
ter Mr. Collins would serve for four years. .Mr. Stokely then reed a' letter
from Mr. Harry A. Brown in which he stated he wished to withdraw from the
possibility of receiving the four year term in favor of Mt. Beatty. After
consideration by the council and the village attorney it was agreed that Mr.
Beatty and Mr. Collins will serve until the election of 1957-and Mr.r Brown
together with Mr. Stokely and Dr. Leonard will serve until the election -of
1955.
Mr. Stokely then asked the new member, Mr. Charles`11:. Collins,
to take the anti -communistic. oat .which was administered by"the clerk.
The oath of office was then taken by all the councilmen present. .
Mr. Stokely then announced that it was in order to havenomina-
tions for the office of mayor. On motion of Mr. Beatty, seconded be Mr.
Collins, Dr. Leonard was nominated for the office of Mayor. As there were
no further nominations Dr. Leonard was unanimously elected Mayor -of Bal
Harbour Village.
Clerk.
The oath of'office was then administered to Dr. Leonard by the
Dr. Leonard, as Mayor, then called for nominations for the office
of assistant -mayor. On motion of Mr. Collins, seconded by Mr. Stokely, Mr.
Beatty was nominated for this office. The nominations were closed and one,;;
vote Mr. Beatty.was unaaimeusly elected assistant -mayor of Bal Harbour.
There being no further business before the meeting the cp;xnciI
adjourned.`
