HomeMy Public PortalAboutTOL PR 2011-05-11 TBL Volunteer Luncheon Town of Leesburg News Release For Immediate Release Thomas Balch Library Recognizes Volunteers At Annual Appreciation Luncheon Leesburg, VA (May 11, 2011) – On Wednesday, May 4, 2011, the Thomas Balch Library Advisory Commission recognized the contributions of its many volunteers with an appreciation luncheon. “The success of the Thomas Balch Library is attributable in large part to the support we receive from our community of volunteers,” explained Alexandra Gressitt, the Library’s Director. “We are fortunate to have so many talented and dedicated volunteers. Volunteers contribute to every facet of the Library’s operations, including research, transcribing manuscripts, indexing collections, assisting customers and teaching seminars and classes.” This year’s honorees included: • Peggy & Fred Howard and Betty & Bobby Lowenbach, for their efforts on photographic identification. • Emily Hershman (Wake Forest University), Carolyn Jackson (Wellesley College), Victoria Venne (Shenandoah University) and Sarah Wycoff (James Madison University), all student interns who assisted with processing manuscript collections. • Gloria Borgrink, for her work on the Nannon Carr Collection. • Maggie Clarridge, for her editing and proofreading work, as well as her assistance with our teacher training classes. • Don Cooper, for his work indexing the photographic collection and assistance with the Library’s annual inventory. • Teckla Cox who is processing the Leesburg Garden Club records. In addition, the Library has received two $500 grants from Northrup Grumman, Lisa’s employer, in recognition of her community efforts. • Gary Dickens who has assisted with filming events and scanning images. • Candice Howard who has spent many years indexing copies of the Loudoun Times Mirror. • Donna Jamison who has been working on the Vertical File Project and assisted with teacher training classes. • Betty Keller and Cindy Timmerman, for their efforts cataloguing and creating phase boxes for a collection of Law Books from the Commonwealth Attorney’s office. • Becky Ottinger who recently completed processing the Ladies Board of the Loudoun Hospital (INOVA) Collection and is currently working on a series of small collections relating to Loudoun County Public Schools. • Wynne Saffer, for her unfailing assistance with mailings and the annual inventory. Wynne also serves as chair of the Cemetery Committee, has taught classes for the Library and will be teaching a class in December on Deed Research. • Kathy Stolldorf who is currently assisting with the indexing newspapers. • Karolyn Whitely who assisted with our teacher training classes. The Friends of the Thomas Balch Library, represented by president Ron Rust, and the Library’s Black History Committee were also recognized at the luncheon for their contributions to the Library. “The Library’s annual volunteer appreciation luncheon is one of the most rewarding events of the year,” commented John Wells, Leesburg’s Town Manager. “I am always impressed with the generosity of this group of outstanding people.
