Ida Lee Park Tennis Center Hosts 4th Annual A.V. Symington
Compass Draw Tournament
Leesburg, VA (May 19, 2011) – The Ida
Lee Park Tennis Center hosted the 4th
annual A.V. Symington Compass Draw
Tournament on May 7 and 8, 2011, with
32 players in the field.
The tournament’s format, known as
“compass draw”, divides the players into
eigh brackets, with each bracket
representing compass point (North,
Northwest, West, etc). When a player
loses a match, rather than being
eliminated from play, he or she moves
into a new bracket. The match winners
remain in their original brackets.
“The advantage of the compass draw tournament format is that it allows for all levels of play
and guarantees that every team gets at least four matches,” explained Moses Gittens, Ida Lee’s
Head Tennis Professional and director of the tournament. “Players of all skill levels get the
chance to play competitively against the top players in the tournament, and that makes it more
fun.”
This year’s champions are Matt Stillwagon and Jennifer Beamish (pictured above right and
center with Moses Gittens, left). Runners up in the championship round are Rod Young and Lu
Pavlov. Consolation round winners are Steve Solow and Shirley Cornett. Consolation round
runners up are Joe Kucharski and Kara Reister.
