The Park Commission of Medina, Minnesota met in special session on June 5, 2010 at 9:00 a.m.
to tour five of the City of Medina's parks. Park Commission Chair Ben Benson presided.
1) Call to Order
Commissioners present: Ben Benson, Madeleine Linck, Janet White, Bill Waytas,
Chris Hilberg, Ann Thies and Paul Jaeb
Commissioners absent: None
Also present: Assistant to City Administrator Jodi Gallup, Public Works
Superintendent Steve Scherer, and City Council member
Carolyn Smith
2) Annual Tour of Parks.
Holy Name Park
It was noted that the new Holy Name Park restoration project sign was starting to wrinkle
from the rain. Staff will follow up with the sign company to question getting the sign
repaired at no cost.
Linck noticed that there was still non -degradable netting in the park. It was discussed that
the netting was from old projects and would not be used on new projects in the future.
It was noted that the lawn mowers are still mowing too close to the buffer. Scherer stated
that the lawn mowing company has been notified of the buffer, but when different
employees mow the park each week it is hard for them to know where the buffer should
start. It was suggested to mark the buffer area so future mowers know where to stop
mowing.
The Park Commissioners inspected the rain garden and noticed a reduced goose poop
problem because of all the vegetation in the park.
It was discussed that the dock in the 2010 C.I.P. could be a permanent dock if it would
help cut down on extra maintenance. It was suggested that staff should hire out a
contractor to install the dock if the $10,000 budget would allow for it.
It was noted that the stepping stones that are in the 2010 C.I.P. will be going from the end
of the trail to the dock.
Discussion took place on where to move the bathroom enclosure and the garbage and
recycling containers. It was determined that the bathroom enclosure should be placed on
the east side of the parking lot and the garbage and recycling containers should be hidden
behind the enclosure.
It was noted that vehicles are cutting the west corner when entering the parking lot and it
is wearing on the grass. It was suggested to put up posts or decorative rocks to keep
vehicles on the parking lot.

Discussion took place on the location of the park sign. There was a general consensus to
place the park sign just west of the parking lot entrance.
Hunter Lions Park
It was noted that the tennis court was in bad shape and the cracks needed to be filled in to
not cause a liability.
Discussion took place on removing the tennis court and replacing it with a hockey rink or
sport court. It was determined that the Park Commission would continue the tennis court
discussion at their next meeting.
It was noted that the volleyball court needs to be weeded.
The Park Commissioners walked to the back side of Hunter Lions Park to inspect the
recent prairie burn in the nature area. It was suggested to mow a trail along the perimeter
of the nature area to create a walking trail. A sign could be placed at the entrance to the
nature area indicating that it was the entrance to a meadow grass trail. A second sign
could be placed by the active park features directing people back to the trail.
Linck suggested installing two blue bird houses in the nature area.
It was determined that the new park sign would be placed at the road where the old sign
currently sits. Discussion took place on where to relocate the old sign. There was
discussion concerning whether to place the sign in front of the basketball court or in the
baseball outfield.
It was noted that maintenance on the ball field fence would need to be budgeted in the
near future.
Medina Lake Preserve
The Park Commission walked the path around Medina Lake Preserve.
It was noted that the thistles on the path need to be removed and more wood chips need to
be placed on the trail.
It was noted that someone must have sprinkled or planted wild flower seeds around the
trail.
The Park Commissioners inspected the tree houses that were being built illegally by
neighbor kids in the Bridgewater Subdivision. Staff is working on getting the houses
removed.
There was a general consensus that a regulation sign should be placed along side the trail
and the park sign should be placed in the park at the end of the walking bridge.

Rainwater Nature Area
The Park Commission noted that the screening of the electrical box was in the 2010
C.I.P.
There was a general consensus that the staked location was the best spot for the park sign.
The Park Commissioners suggested that the trail should curve by the pond by mowing a
path along the north east side of the storm water pond to the west to lead down the hill to
the trail on the north side of the park.
It was suggested to plant a large tree by the back side of the park.
Hamel Legion Park
Smith informed the Park Commission that the City of Medina has entered into a purchase
agreement to buy the Eiden property located just north of Hamel Legion Park (next to
Argent Park and Farmers State Bank of Hamel). The City plans to turn the property into a
gravel parking lot. Linck mentioned that there might be baby bats in the old building and
wanted to make sure it was inspected before the building was torn down to become a
parking lot. Linck volunteered to inspect the building for baby bats once the City of
Medina closes on the property.
The Park Commissioner took a tour of the new field house facilities and noted a small
patch of water on the wood flooring by one of the balconies. Staff will follow up with the
general contractor to get the problem resolved.
It was recommended to budget for a future sign to be placed on the trail that would
indicate the distance for one lap around the trail.
3) Adjourn
A motion was made by Thies, seconded by Hilberg and passed unanimously, to adjourn
the meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:00 p.m.
Minutes prepared by Jodi Gallup.
