The ride travels from Somerset, Pennsylvania to the Pentagon, then to the site of the World Trade Center in New York City. On Friday, August 19, 2011, the motorcycle procession will travel through Leesburg, coming down King Street through the historic downtown, before proceeding to the Route 7/15 Bypass and then on to the Dulles Greenway. This memorial ride has traveled through Leesburg in previous years with about 400 riders. Because this year is the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the ride is expected to be much larger. The Foundation is expecting more than 1,800 motorcycles to participate this year. On July 26, 2011, the ride organizers requested that the Leesburg Town Council authorize the ride to be routed on King Street through Leesburg’s historic downtown. The Town Council unanimously approved their request. Spectators who wish to watch and cheer as the ride passes through the downtown are encouraged to arrive in downtown Leesburg not later than 1:30 p.m. Parking will be available in the Town Hall Parking Garage, at the Liberty Street Parking Lot (Liberty & Royal Streets) and at the Pennington Parking Lot (Church & North Streets). For safety reasons, spectators will not be allowed to hand any items (bottled water, flags, flowers, etc.) to the motorcycle riders. In addition, once the procession begins, spectators will not be able to cross King Street on foot. For full information about the ride route, the road closures and detour routes, please visit the Town of Leesburg website at www.leesburgva.gov/index.aspx?page=1472.
