TREE BOARD
Regular meeting
9 a.m. Aug. 17, 2022
Board Meeting Room of Town Hall Annex, 105 E. Corbin St.
Present: Chair Casey Collins, Bridget Booher, Linda Paynter and Gregory
Yavelak
Absent: Vice Chair Tim Logue, Sharon Billing and Mixon Nelson
Staff: Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie Trueblood
1. Call to order, roll call and confirmation of quorum
Chair Casey Collins called the meeting to order at 9 a.m. Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie
Trueblood called the roll and confirmed the presence of a quorum.
2. Agenda changes and approval
There was none. The agenda stood as presented.
3. Minutes review and approval
Minutes from regular meeting on May 18, 2022
Motion: Member Greg Yavelak moved approval of the May 18, 2022, minutes as submitted. Member
Bridget Booher seconded.
Vote: 4-0
4. Discussion items
A. Request from Laura Juel to plant three trees in the right of way at 158 W. King St.
The Juels presented their request.
Motion: Booher moved to recommend three serviceberry trees to be planted, contingent on NCDOT
approval, in the specified location with the condition that the Juels accept watering
responsibility for at least the first year and work with staff to fund the project. Member Linda
Paynter seconded.
Vote: 4-0
B. Stiltgrass removal planning
There was consensus to host a volunteer workday on Aug. 27. No formal action was taken.
C. Video planning: How to Plant a Tree
No formal action was taken.

5. Updates
A. Garden Club
There was no update.
B. Invasive Removal Team
There was no update.
C. Staff
Trueblood’s updates included:
• Staff will be replacing tree identification signs along Riverwalk and adding some to Treasure Tree that
are visible from the public right of way.
• Trees have been evaluated for removal: a sycamore at 129 E. Tryon, a hackberry at Turnip Patch Park
and a chinaberry tree at 219 N. Hassell. Yavelak noted a sycamore in front of 304 Mitchell St. needs to
be removed as well.
• The Parks and Recreation Board is working on updating the Gold Park Master Plan. Tree Board will
have input on that plan.
6. Adjournment
Collins adjourned the meeting at 10:21 a.m.
