Leesburg’s 9-11 Memorial Observation
Town marks 10th anniversary with Remembrance Ceremony
Leesburg, VA (August 31, 2011) – To mark the 10th anniversary of the tragic events and lives
lost throughout the United States on September 11, 2001, the Town of Leesburg will be holding
a remembrance ceremony on Sunday, September 11 at 2:00pm at the Freedom Memorial in
Freedom Park (101 Colonel Granata Cir SE). The ceremony will feature guest speakers Leesburg
Police Chief Joseph Price and Deputy Fire Chief Randy Shank, as well as words from Mayor
Kristen Umstattd.
The Town of Leesburg encourages residents to observe the designated “National Day of Service
and Remembrance” by volunteering, donating time or goods, or simply offering a helping hand
during this day of commemoration. The ‘Serve America Act’ was signed into law by President
Obama on April 21, 2009. Senator Chuck Schumer (NY), a supporter of the legislation, said,
“September 11 should not only be a day for mourning - it should be a day to think about our
neighbors, our community and our country."
In addition to the ceremony, the Town’s Freedom Memorial at Freedom Park will be open from
10:00am – 5:00pm for those wishing to pay their respects individually.
This event is free, open to the public, and will be held rain or shine. For more information,
contact the Town of Leesburg’s Parks and Recreation Department at (703) 777-1368 or visit our
