HomeMy Public PortalAbout10052021 Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month_encrypted Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month WHEREAS, each year, National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed by celebrating the culture, heritage, and countless contributions of those whose ancestors were indigenous to North, Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Spain; and WHEREAS, what began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week was expanded in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15th and ending on October 15th; and WHEREAS, the day of September 15th is significant as the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, while Mexico, Chile, and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16th, 18th and 21st, respectively; and WHEREAS, we recognize that Hispanic and Latino heritage is American heritage, and see their indelible footprints in significant and diverse contributions to the cultural, educational, economic, and political vitality of our city, state, and nation; and WHEREAS, we honor the invaluable ways Hispanic and Latino Americans who live, work, and visit throughout Bothell influence and enrich our community, while rededicating ourselves to address the lack of equal access to opportunity many still face. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Liam Olsen, do hereby proclaim September 15th – October 15th as Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month in the City of Bothell, and invite all to celebrate the rich diversity of the Hispanic and Latino communities and the many ways they contribute to our society.
