Town of Leesburg and Loudoun County Now Accept Each
Other’s Tax Payments
Leesburg, VA (September 12, 2011) – The Town of Leesburg and the County of Loudoun are
proud to announce that each jurisdiction will now accept real estate and personal property tax
payments for the other. Thanks to state legislation promoted by Senator Mark Herring and
Delegate Joe May in the 2010 Virginia General Assembly session, Leesburg residents may now
make Town tax bill payments at either of the County’s two Treasurer’s Office locations in
Sterling or Leesburg. They may also pay their County tax bills at the Leesburg Town Hall.
This new service is a result of action by County Treasurer Roger Zurn and Leesburg Finance
Director Norm Butts in seeking changes to the Virginia State Code to allow counties and towns
to accept each other’s tax payments. Once the new State legislation was in place, Leesburg
Town Council and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved a cooperative agreement
for the acceptance of reciprocal tax payments.
“It just made sense that taxpayers should be able to pay both their Town and County taxes at
one location, rather than make them visit two separate locations,” explained Treasurer Roger
Zurn.
“The Town Council values its citizens and looks to make government as convenient and
accessible as possible,” added Town Manager John Wells.
Town residents must make separate checks payable to the proper locality and have their
respective tax bills with them. The Town and County may only accept check or cash.
“Given that October 5th is the due date for both County and Town Personal Property taxes, this
new service should be timely for the citizens,” Zurn added.
