TREE BOARD
Regular meeting
9 a.m. Sept. 21, 2022
Board Meeting Room of Town Hall Annex, 105 E. Corbin St.
Present: Chair Casey Collins, Vice Chair Tim Logue, Sharon Billings,
Bridget Booher, Mixon Nelson, Linda Paynter and Greg Yavelak
Staff: Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie Trueblood
1. Call to order, roll call and confirmation of quorum
Chair Casey Collins called the meeting to order at 9 a.m. Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie
Trueblood called the roll and confirmed the presence of a quorum.
2. Agenda changes and approval
There was none. The agenda stood as presented.
3. Minutes review and approval
Minutes from regular meeting on Aug. 17, 2022
Motion: Member Greg Yavelak moved approval of the Aug. 17, 2022, minutes as submitted. Member
Sharon Billings seconded.
Vote: 7-0
4. Discussion items
A. Video planning: How to Plant a Tree
Collins will record the video to provide an audio track that will be overlayed with instructional photos.
B. Fall Plantings
Trueblood reviewed past planting projects.
She noted that:
• The stream buffers at Turnip Patch and Murray Street Park need replacement plants now that
stiltgrass has been removed. She recommended beautyberry. Winterberry holly was also suggestd.
• The neighbor adjacent to the northern border of Turnip Patch Park has requested some additional
bushes between the Loropetalum and was specific in her requests. Board members weren’t certain
about the objective of the neighbor.
• The Fairview Community Watch may have planting requests for the community center property.
Logue noted that it would be good to plant some woody plants along the river where invasives have been
removed. Trueblood added that stormwater funds may cover those plantings.
Trueblood suggested planting three to five red bud trees near the picnic table on Riverwalk.

Board members expressed interest in planting street trees along sidewalks near Central and Hillsborough
elementary schools.
5. Updates
A. Garden Club
Billings gave a brief update. A speaker was scheduled for the Garden Club to talk about snakes.
B. Invasive Removal Team
Logue gave a brief update. He is working on removing ailanthus.
C. Staff
Trueblood’s updates included:
• Tree identification project
• Tree removals
• Video release dates
6. Adjournment
Collins adjourned the meeting at 10:30 a.m.
