Leesburg Kiwanis to Host 55th Annual Halloween Parade on
Monday, October 31, 2011
Leesburg Police Offer Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips
Leesburg, VA (October 26, 2011) – The 55th annual Leesburg Halloween Parade, hosted and
organized by the Leesburg Kiwanis Club, will be held on Monday, October 31, 2011 through
downtown Leesburg. The oldest Halloween parade in the eastern United States, the parade will
begin at 6:00 p.m. and will follow the traditional parade route down King Street from Ida Lee
Park to Fairfax Street. For more information about the parade, including participation
guidelines and registration forms, please visit www.leesburgkiwanis.org.
King Street will be closed from Battlefield Parkway to Catoctin Circle from 5:30 p.m. until
approximately 8:00 p.m. for the parade. The street will be reopened once clean-up operations
by the Town’s Public Works Department are completed. Motorists should plan on alternate
travel routes during this time and follow the designated detours.
The Town of Leesburg does not designate specific “trick-or-treating” times. However, the
community is reminded that the Town does have a midnight curfew for minors.
The Leesburg Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit offers the following Halloween safety
tips for children:
• Go only to well-lit houses and remain on the porch or front steps. Do not go inside
any houses.
• Travel in small groups and be accompanied by an adult.
• Small children should have their names and addresses attached inside of their
costumes. Children should know their phone numbers in case of an emergency.
• Bring treats home before eating them. Parents should check all items for safety.
• Use costume knives and swords that are flexible, not sharp or rigid.
• Use light sticks or other indirect light sources, stay on sidewalks, and avoid crossing
yards.
• Cross streets at the corner or intersections. Do not cross between cars where it
would be difficult to be seen.

• Stop at all corners and stay together as a group before crossing the road.
• Wear clothing that is bright, reflective, and flame retardant.
• Avoid wearing hats that could slide down over the eyes.
• Avoid wearing long, baggy, oversized or loose costumes, or oversized shoes to
prevent tripping.
• Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.
