Leesburg Receives Distinguished Budget Presentation Award
for 27th Straight Year
Leesburg, VA (November 2, 2011) – The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA)
announced that the Town of Leesburg has received the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget
Presentation Award for its Fiscal Year 2012-2013 budget. The Town of Leesburg’s Finance
Department has received this award every year since 1986.
The GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award recognizes organizations that meet the
highest principles of governmental budgeting. Recipients must satisfy nationally recognized
guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well
an organization’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guides and
a communications device. Budget documents must be rated as “proficient” in all four
categories, and in fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories to receive the award.
When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an organization, a Certificate of
Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual or department
designated as primarily responsible for the achievement. This certificate has been presented to
the Town of Leesburg Finance Department.
“This award is reflective of the significant investment of time and effort of all of our staff and
elected officials,” commented John Wells. “This year’s award is particularly noteworthy because
it is the first time we’ve done a multi-year budget. We have an outstanding professional
budget staff and it has been through their expertise, under the leadership of the Town Council,
that Leesburg has achieved this recognition.”
The Government Finance Officers Association is a non-profit professional association serving
over 17,600 government finance professional throughout North America. The GFOA
Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is the only national awards program in governmental
budgeting.
