A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF TEMPLE CITY EXPRESSING CONCERN
OVER THE WIDESPREAD INCIDENTS OF
MILITANCY ON THE CAMPUSES OF CALIFORNIA
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
WHEREAS, increasing numbers of incidents have occurred
on the campuses of publicly supported colleges and univer-
sities in California and throughout the nation protesting
alledged inequities in educational opportunities and for
other reasons; and
WHEREAS, considerable destruction of public property
has resulted from the aforementioned "demonstrations"
causing unnecessary and unwarranted expense to the tax-
payers as well as depriving the vast majority of students
from peacefully pursuing their desire to further their
education; and
WHEREAS, any defects which may exist in our academic
system cannot be effectively or permanently corrected by
destruction of public property, threats of violence, intimi-
dation or other forms of militancy; and
WHEREAS, public apathy should be of immediate and
vital concern to the overwhelming majority of citizens who
subscribe to the democratic processes by which our nation
is governed.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Temple
City resolves as follows:
SECTION 1. That it deplores the violent, unlawful
and wantonly destructive methods employed by those who
profess to challenge the academic policies and programs
of our educational institutions.
SECTION 2. That lasting changes in our educational
system, if necessary and desirable, cannot come about in
an atmosphere of tension and turmoil.
SECTION 3. That the elements of personal and collec-
tive responsibility must not be forgotten by those who
chant ridiculous and unreasonable demands while at the
same time expressing contempt for all authority and for
those who have made available to them the world's greatest
system of education and government.
SECTION 4. That whatever lawful means are necessary
shall and must be employed to ensure the safety and welfare
of the vast majority of students and faculty who desire to
pursue the academic program without continuing disruptions.
