A RESOLUTION ADOPTING THE AIMS OF THE URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL ACCORDS
WHEREAS, the City of Moab has helped lead efforts to recognize the need for cities across the globe to address
special environmental challenges and opportunities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Moab was the first community in the United States to be deemed a "Green Power
Community" by the Environmental Protection Agency; and
WHEREAS Moab City has helped lead efforts to promote and utilize renewable energy resources such as wind
power, solar power, and geothermal energy; and
WHEREAS, the City of Moab General Plan specifically sets as goals the protection of air quality, water quality,
and visual resources; and
WHEREAS, the City of Moab General Plan specifically sets as a purpose of the Plan "to improve the physical
environment of the community;" and
WHEREAS, the Moab City Council recognizes that the majority of the world's population now resides in cities
and that cities consume 75 percent of the world's natural resources; and
WHEREAS, cities have an opportunity to adopt measures that support the sustainable utilization and
management of energy, urban design, waste reduction, transportation, environmental health and water resources;
and
WHEREAS, cities throughout the world have come together to endorse and support the aims of the Urban
Environmental Accords; and
WHEREAS, the Urban Environmental Accords are a series of action -oriented steps that can be adopted as
guidelines at the city level to achieve urban sustainability, promote healthy economies, advance social equity
and protect the world's ecosystem.
NOW THEREFORE, WE, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF MOAB DO HEREBY RESOLVE:
To support the overall goal of the Urban Environmental Accords and to use the Accords as reference points for
setting achievable goals and standards that are tailored to fit the specific needs and desires of our community;
To support the efforts of the Mayor of Moab to appoint an advisory group that will assist the city in reviewing
the Urban Environmental Accords and setting achievable standards and goals for the City of Moab.
